Okay, I know this post is like 8 months old, but I was searching for some more info on this year's fair ... I just wrote my own post about the concerts that are scheduled ... and I ended up here. I love your detailed description ... makes me wish August/September wasn't so far away!

Anyway, it's nice to read about someone else who loves the Oregon State Fair too. Have fun at this year's if you're able to go. I'll be there!

Hi, Emily! Just wanted to comment and say we (my wife and I) are really enjoying your blog. We just moved to Salem a little less than a month ago, and we've been exploring the area in both the real and virtual worlds, and your blog has been a great guide.

We visited the fair twice while it was here, once for the demolition derby, and once for the roller derby (we are big fans of derbys). We had a fantastic time, although it did seem a little small for a state fair. We moved here from Nashville, TN, which is prime fair country, in case you didn't know. While the people watching here wasn't quite as good as it can be at the Cheatham County Fair, it still felt like a tiny piece of home.

Anyway, just wanted to say hello, and thanks for the great entries.

We ended up having a great event. Between our two All-Start Oregon Derby Scrimmages we had over 60 skaters from every league in Oregon. We had over 3000 people attend. It was a grand time.

I would be happy to get some chamois cloths. I hear they sell themselves. People in the know know this, and I'm not surprised that you're one of them, Jan!

Hate to ruin the surprise, but you are getting a roll of chamois cloths as a baby shower gift. We bought the special deal--yes, three for the price of one!! That was us, waving our $20 to get the bonanza. (I'm not kidding.)

But Iowa has the best. Also, I'd like to complain that the fried candy bars in Salem were not freshly fried. If I can't see the batter being dipped and then fried, I don't want it.

I couldn't believe he was there in the stinking flesh. Nice guy. Good hiking books. Fiction sounds ridiculous.

Crap. William Sullivan was at the state fair? I was instead backpacking one of his hikes through a storm of ice pellets. Fair sounds like more fun!

We had a grand time at the fair, too, although I must point out... it's small. Compared to the Indiana State Fair, which is far from the largest, this thing is tiny. Of course the grounds don't house an ice skating arena, a huge dirt track with massive amphitheater and miles and miles of animal buildings.

I think Minnesota has the largest, doesn't it?
