Good news for the movement against Keep Salem Lame

This is a page I ripped from a recent issue of the phenomenally compelling GOOD magazine, which is quickly becoming my go-to place for all things urban and green (I’ve got the green thing down, it’s the urban I am missing…)

Keep Salem Lame? More like: Keep San Antonio Lame! That city even has a Facebook group devoting to all things lame in San Antonio.

What does Salem have?

It doesn’t even have credit to the phrase. That’s good news, since the city’s perceived lameness has clearly not transcended the state’s borders.

What should we Keep Salem?

What’s wrong with “Lame?” I don’t think we should impede change in this town anyway. The slogan should be “Move the State Pen out of Salem.” How about, “Finish the Boise Cascade Project.” “Keep away from chains?” We need a focus group on this thing.

My neighbor was talking to me the other day about checking out the grocery outlet and he asked if I went to the one downtown. No, I was near Lancaster so I went there.

    “Don’t support the strip, man!”

Um… isn’t it the same thing? Grocery outlet is grocery outlet is grocery outlet? Does it even matter at that point?

But perhaps a new meme will emerge from that:

    Skip the Strip.

“Don’t support the strip, man!” Haha! He really said that? Amazing. I agree with your point though. It’s still a Grocery Outlet, no matter where it is. How was it, what did you think?

I think Lancaster has plenty of places I’d like to go to, I just don’t care to make the extra effort usually. Downtown, however, has traffic problems too. Can’t win ‘em all.

I’ve heard the strip described as a “Zoning Abortion.” I have a hard time trying to reconcile calling it Lancaster since I’m from Lancaster, PA, known worldwide for its Amish, its fertile farmland, and its social conservatism…

Grocery outlet. Same mozzarella as Fred Meyer, only cheaper! Love it. Ben and Jerry’s in half-gallon jugs! I’ll take it. And then, a lot of chips and dips. Meh. We don’t eat a lot of processed snacky stuff, so it’s really only useful as an exploratory adventure best assumed with few expectations.

Absolutely. You never know what you’ll find, or not be able to find. Once I bought a fancy-brand healthy cereal there, only to dig into a bowl and find it was stale. Not so nice. Around Christmas though they often have brie en croute that you can just pop in the oven! Even though making it by hand is easy, it doesn’t get much quicker than that :)

Lancaster, PA… I have a friend who lives in the area, a photographer… looks like a GORGEOUS place! I’d love to visit one day.
