My acupuncturist told me about your column. I being new to Salem (well a year and a half into it, and still hating it) TOTALLY love your column. It refreshed my spirit reading it tonight. :) Thank you.

    • Two thoughts, Jennifer: Acupuncturists reading my column and passing it along… cool! Not loving Salem, well, I think we all kind of feel that sometimes. Chin up! Loving requires much more action than hating.

  3. HI Emily! I LOVE your writing and views of Salem. Mary Lou

    Hi Emily,

Found your blog as a result of my Google search ‘Salem, Oregon newcomers’. I’m hoping to be a newcomer soon, the moment my house in The Netherlands sells. Had to SMILE at your bio – sounds like we’ve lived in similar places!

I was born and raised in the South Bay (of SF), then spent a good 9 years in Maryland; first high school on the Eastern Shore, then college @ UMCP – a stone’s throw from DC, which I frequented often, more for the mall (Smithsonians) and the malls (Potomac Mills / Georgetown shops) than anything else. I did not experience any muggings in DC, but do credit my stern-look-while-walking-with-a-purpose to many a visit to the city.

During high school, my parents and I made frequent visits to PA, at the invitation of my mom’s friends, the Amish, from whom she bought the yummiest cheesecakes @ their Maryland farmer’s markets, nearly every week.

I moved to The Netherlands after graduating from college with the hopes of discovering the culture up close, living amongst the tulip fields and windmills and getting to see an occasional different country now and then. Check. Check. Check. Did all that… and now I’m off to Oregon! Which similarly has tulip fields… and lots of rain, just like here.

I made my first visit to Salem this past summer, after reading and watching many an article and show about Oregon’s natural beauty. The farmer’s market in Portland was also an eye catcher. I stayed at a lovely B&B, a short walk from the capitol, and made many daytrips to beautiful and very lovely towns all up and down the coast.

Now that my house is for sale, with interest from a potential buyer, I’m racing around the internet to find as much info as I can about actually LIVING in Salem. I have many friends in the state, from Portland to Salem to Coos Bay.. all are transplants from California, leading very busy lives, giving me as much information as possible.. but it is so nice to hear it from you, with a journalist’s perspective, all the quirks and the tips and tricks of the city.

I did LOVE Bush Park, Riverside Park, and the downtown strip with the coffee house (I forget the name – it’s cute inside)..

For the last 7 years I have been a full time Mom, loving every moment. Before that, had the pleasure of holding various exciting positions within very exciting companies in and around Amsterdam. I do speak Dutch – what I would like to think of as fluently – my son will probably beg to differ. I earned a BA in Linguistics and a BS in Early Childhood Development (frm UMCP, 13 yrs ago) and have a huge interest in the Montessori method of education. I hold a certificate in both TEFL for adults as well as for Young Learners… have been teaching a small group of little girls for the last 3 weeks in between my volunteering at my son’s school.

I was so excited to find your blog, and also excited to see that you’re on Twitter! My Dutch mother-in-law (Emilie) made it clear to me that I was very out-of-the-loop with the family since I closed my Twitter account a few months ago (due to non-use, I’m busy!).. so I recently reopened an account and will definitely look for you there.

Can’t wait to read the rest of your blog and will definitely note down any hints and tips you give about living in the city!!!

    Best regards,
Dana, a hopeful newcomer to Salem – soon!

I love your column! It is so refreshing to hear a positive perspective of Salem. My husband and I moved here from Seattle for him to go to law school, but he’s three years out and we can’t bring ourselves to leave. We are finding it to be a great place to raise our new family, even in our “terrible” NE neighborhood…

I was a little embarrassed to admit that I like it here at first, but you’ve helped make me proud of our little town! Thank you!
